Spring Bulbs

3 Feb

The gardening business was so busy last fall that I almost lost my beautiful spring bulbs forever. All summer I had enjoyed the lush leaves of my elephant ears and the endlessly flowering gladiolus callianthus bursting out of my front garden. I love using spring bulbs because they add an exotic flavour to the garden, and I can change the colour scheme and textures of the garden year after year if I feel like it. The only problem is that they are tropical and cannot survive the winter. Therefore every fall I become determined to reward them for their perseverence by saving them from certain wintery death.

Then I think about them again around Christmas when it is far too late, their mushy leaves poking through the snow. The cycle was finally broken late last fall.
